Ok so theres only one more week left of uni. EXACTLY!! And Tim and I still haven't gotten the website up and running. I'm pretty disapointed about that, and I thought we'd have that done sooner, BUT we still don't have much content from the students but that's still no excuse because student content isn't all the content thats suppose to be on the webiste.
R001 - This is what the website is now, and still is. Im quite sad and disapointed that it wasn't as easy as i thought, and that my dreamweaver doesnt work because i have to get damien to fix it everytime i open and close the program.
This is a listing of some of the content thats suppose to be up; - HOME PAGE: * Picture of uphere from DL * Dates and time
- Contacts: * Students emails & names (mayber numbers?), and what subject they're doing. * Teachers emails & names and what subject they teached.
- About: * What the exhibition is about. I think we should just get the information that was on that thing that Vikki wrote up.
- Student Art: * A picture or 2 of every students artwork and beside it maybe (contact info, info about the art.
And I'm not sure what the other information is.
But in todays class Tim and I were collaborating about who's artwork is going to be in it, but since theres so little I guess its just the students that could be bothered that gets to be in it. Also I need to get my dreamweaver fixed so it's not just Tim thats editing the whole website.
Collaboration:
collaborate means working together.
what are the 3 best things about your efforts for this years exhibition ?
The 3 best efforts for me is;
- more collaborating than I thought I'd do
- more organizing and getting organized.
- Making and putting my actual art work together because its not like every year i get to make a jeans advertisement.
R001 - Another of my best efforts is my "dedication" lol.
Did you manage time well?No I don't think I did, but then I did. I didn't because I still have many things to do, in little. Did you manage materials well i.e test prototypes?
No I haven't because I still need to test other things out. Have you researched installation methods?Yes, I was thinking about just gluing my poster to a A2 sized cardboard piece and velcrobbing it to the wall. Hopefully the cardboard won't be too heavy, and for the brochure I want a white Clinth thing Have you made a shortlist of the essentials for the last WEEK?No I haven't, but I'm going to write one now; For Exhibition:
- Velcrobe
- Clinth
- Artwork (brochure, Comic book cover, Flyer & business card)
- Description tag thing
For Uni:
- GET I.P's done, photoshop and dreamweaver
- Check Blogs & visual diaries
- Work on comic book cover
- Email Illustraitors
- Get content for website
That's all I can think of right now. Short list of what i need in the last 24 hours?I need to get my act together thats what, and check that all my artwork is there and up, make sure no spelling mistakes, everything right. R002 - This is what my short list of things i need to do looks like.
R003 - Image of my visual diary
Blog Exercise – Using Failure
Discuss these questions in regards to the exhibition.
1 . List and describe 2 areas of failure in your preparation for uphere
First area of failure: Communication. I really felt at times that it was hard to communicate with some other groups because they'd ignore you or be too busy with their own portfolios or exhibition work. Some other communication problems were that some people wouldn't listen or just disagreed with your opinion, I ran into that problem a couple times but nothing too severe. In saying that if it happened all the time, a lot of informations and collaborating would be missed and if we improved in that area we could've had even more of a amazing exhibition.
Second area of Failure: Getting organised. some groups including my own weren't very organised and last minute, it definitely brings some of the other groups down in regards to sharing information, or just slowing productivity down. For example Tim and I were to make the website for the exhibition but we were so unorganised and lacked communication we ended up giving up and cracking under pressure and time that we didn't create the website.
2. Describe how you could realistically improve on this next time you exhibit
Next time I exhibit: Ways that I could improve and would make productivity much faster and efficient would be communication. That is one of the major keys. Talking to your lecturer when you stuck on a problem and figuring out ways to approach it and the solve it. Also setting deadline for yourself. For myself personally I am one to be late and never meet deadlines so next time I should set it a week or a couple days before the cut off date. Depending on what I'm creating and how much time I think I'll need. Writing things down is very helpful especially in a organised manner, i.e. Sticky notes or colour coordinate the different sections of your work so it's pieced together easier. And if I ever make a hands on practical creation/design again I'll be more hands on and get straight into. Don't mess around wasting time writing a essay about it, just do it and then write about it, document all the trials and errors and that should help finish the project. For example last year I wanted to make a complicated shoe box, I spent too much time thinking about it then experimenting with the shape. Therefore I lost time and ended up exhibiting a design instead of a package. So three keys; Be organised, Be loud and communicate, Be hands on!
R004 - This is a video about confetti and throwing it on new years.
in regards to, communicating and the little slip ups, every detail counts so it can look amazing.
Origination:
Todays class we are doing group work. Its suppose to be fun. Logistics: Amelia and Sally present and update us, 2 weeks to go.
With the logistics, we were just updating what's going on, and information with the interviews (contact the media class), printing, and seeing the progress on everyone's work. group project: 20mins
Using YouTube - Groups;
- 1. Communication Methods - Showed us the "future of communications"
- 2. Emerging Technologies - Showed us the "3D television without glasses"
- 3. Idea adaptation - Showed "bigdog robot"
Our group came up with the "Big Dog Robot" as idea adaption, because this big dog can adapt! Its a robot used for military services to carry heavy loads through dangerous and or over long stretches of land. It is adaptable because it can jump over objects, walk on ice, through thick ice, fire and many more terrains. Still going through trial and error, this is a very handy robot to have because if stock is low and the roads are too dangerous they can send this robot. all it needs is some form of security e.g. a human sensor camera that can shoot bullets at the enemy.
R001 - Big dog youtube link of it walking on ice.
R002 - BigDog Robot. Print Screen.
Distributing the invitations:I'm going to take a pile and leave it at Baskin n Robbins (work) because heaps of tourists are there. R003 - Yeah Baskins and Robbins represent!
1. What does Maeda call the 3 keys? - Away: more appears less by moving it far away - Open: openness simplifies complexity - Power: use less, gain more
R002 - The Keys (from john maedas book) 2. Describe how you have used these in your work towards UPHERE? Give at least one example of each key.
Away - For example I had to edit heaps of images for my jeans brochure, all these photos appeared less when i layed them all out on the one A3 piece of paper and had them printed. Those 10 or so images are now just the one.
Open- In my work I've used "open" to present the whole of my artwork. For example setting up all my artwork for the final day for the exhibition, i've used open to make all the complex and hard work to seem less and presentable. Power - Ive used this to gain controll of mixed emotions in the class room. For example I've used power to controll myself from speeking my mind so much and just using it to get focused on what i need to do like completing my blogs or tasks.3. Describe an incident in the production of UPHERE where technology has been an enabler…. and another where it has been a disabler! Enabler: It allows us to communicate to each other, to complete our artwork to access information within seconds. Disabler: When we think we can only do these things through technology. There a fast ways to do things such as email a person, then there are slow ways to do things such as actually see that person you emailed in person. Technology is great but it isn't always right way to go.4. At this stage in the exhibition process you are all working on some element or process for the big event. List 3 things (in your current project) that you could take away to simplify and one thing you could add for meaning.
3 Things to simplify the website; - doing it on iweb - not having so much content - not having restricted colour theme.
1 thing add for meaning; - If everyone contributed there share of content before a due date that'd be great. But I should mention this to everyone instead of writing it in my blog. Something I'd like to share. I think as I mentioned some of the things I want to do to simplify the production of the website by using iWeb, would be inappropriate because I think that iWeb is restricted to its creativity where as dreamweaver you can create any CSS or HTML design you desire but it can be a pain sometimes (most times). I mention not having so much content is just absurd because there are so many talented students with so much art to show, but I agree we don't have enough time to see everyone that's showcasing there art in the exhibition therefore we shan't have as much content as I'd like. Third point, not having a restricted colour theme. I think the colours that we have chosen for the exhibition which in fact are the same colours as last years colours, are disgusting. But that's my Opinion. I wish we all just stopped being so indecisive and picked some new trendy colours for our exhibition but since we are restricted that'd fine challenge accepted.
R003 - This is a video about Dreamweaver CS5 vs Adobe Flash CS5. This guy just mentions the top 5 features he likes from each program. I'm not sure or have the slightest clue how to use flash, but I'd like to expand my knowledge and skill about it because theres surely more than one program to create websites.
01 – Have you had to abandon any exhibition design concepts so far?Yes, many concepts, for example the concept for the exhibition poster of the bursting effect and the name burst. 02 – If so, was it hard?No it wasn't hard because it was a group decision to leave the concept behind, but it was disappointing because i thought it was a good idea. 03 – Do you think it is easy to miss a better idea if it is not the first one?Yes, especially if it's a good one. 04 – Do you have any techniques for creating unpredictable ideas?yes, staying up late. Sometimes I get the best ideas late at night. 05 – Is logic the best way to attack a design problem? No, design problems can have many different ways of solution. 06 – What other problem solving methods could work?being un-logical 07 – Do you ever doubt your design decisions?Yes, sometimes. But I think it is good to doubt them sometimes because it can lead to trial an error. 08 – Do you ever consciously put on “another hat” to get inspiration?Yeah i guess. 09 – Describe somebody opposite to you in relation to their design approach? My friend because he just get's straight into it and doesn't think of the outcomes before he makes it. 10 – Could you imagine designing like them?Yes, and its not a bad way to design.
Blog Exercise: Encouraging solutions
R001 - We all need bait of encouraging so we can take our first steps, to come to our solutions. Then we'll be amazed by ourselves to see how far we've walked. This is just a cute example of taking steps, some friends and a little push is all we need. 1 . Describe how you have contributed to design solutions for other group members. For example I have contributed my solution to Jessica by giving her advice about how she could approach her design process of making her tarot cards. 2. Describe how you have challenged designs by other students in your group.I'm not sure if I've done this. 3. Are you flexible when others suggest design improvements / changes?Yes, but then no it depends who's saying it to me. If it were my boss or a someone I didn't know well then I'd be respectful to their advice. If it were my best friend I'd say whats on my mind. 4. Choose a design that group input has changed radically. On the exhibition poster. That design always changed radically as goes for the logo. R002 - On the left drafting for the new Uphere poster, and on the right is the old drafting Uphere poster.
5. Describe the process of shifting the design solution radically. The process of shifting the design solution radically in my opinion is like, you have a good design concept, then to make it even better someone puts there input and they make it sound even better then in the end you forget about the original idea or go back to it. R003 - image of my visual diary
R001 - Simple (Image Above) R002 - Complex (right image) these pictures relate to the first question.
-->
1. Using UPHERE as an example, describe an aspect of your work or something you have worked on, where you have found a symbiotic relationship that is both complexity and simplicity
An example of one of my works/art projects that uses complexity and simplicity, is when I re-trace art work in illustrator. I’ll create the image and make it all vector by using the pen tool which the pen tool is so simple but it makes the art work complex because I have to draw every single shade, highlight and put all the colours in.
2. Provide a conceptual example of a situation that has arisen during this project where you have had a return on failure?
One example of return of failure is when we were deciding the name of the exhibition. It went from “BLOX”, “BLOSSOM” then to “UPHERE”. This process had many returns of failure because we couldn’t make everyone happy and then we couldn’t make our minds up.
3. Homework: How are you using the laws in relation to your contribution to The UPHERE exhibition? Provide a short explanation and example for TWO of the laws so far. Use your work towards and your examples.
Law 2 – Organize, Law 7 - Emotions
In order to execute the exhibition by the due date, everyone has to communicate and cooperate to organize timelines to get the exhibition done. Everyone’s opinions count, which is there emotions going towards the production of organizing and making the exhibition.
R003 - This is what we will look like if we don't communicate, everything will fall apart and we will all be headless chickens running around and screaming. If you need help express your emotions and ask :)
Week 9 Collaboration - Respect. Collaboration Sarah Modoh
R001 - Nelson Mandela giving his speach about freedom and respect.
01 – Do you want or need respect?
yes to both. I want respect so I know that people acknowledge me, and I need respect because some people need respect to feel that they are higher than others in the social hierarchy. Also another thing with respect is that if you see yourself like the other person, and think of everyone as an equal then everyone is respected. 02 – Is there anybody in your class who does not give you respect?
no, not from what I know. 03 – If so, how do you feel about them? 04 – Is there anybody in your class who you do not respect?
No, because too earn respect you have to give respect and I need to be respected. 05 – If so, how could you change your feelings to be more naturally respectful?
A bit more reflective about it, have a bit of a think about it. You can think and separate their actions from there personality/them as a person. 06 – When do you find yourself not listening in class?
When I’m multitasking too much. 07 – What sort of people bore you? People that nag, talk about that one thing repetitiously for too long. People that talk about stories that you weren’t in and they make it sound epic. 08 – What sort of people are bored by you?
Mature people, people with opposite interests. Some people have different personalities. 09 – Do you ever find that other students or teachers are not listening to you?
yes, they might be subconsciously listening, you never know. 10 – If so, How could you improve this situation?
Listening is all about respect, its not all about of personality. To listen is respectful.
Supporting others;
1. Do you get the support you need?
Yes I do, and I think I take advantage of it because sometimes I don’t acknowledge it or realize how much support I get.
2. What percentage of students in your origination class do you support?
6 out of 6!
3. How?
I show that I’m supporting them by listening to them, maybe saying hello to show that I know that they’re in class so they know that I know. By cheering them on maybe in group activities.
4. What about the others?
The others as in the teacher? just show them respect.
5. Could you improve the way you support others? How?
yes, by being more attentive and showing my actions of respect more towards them.
I Think showing support and giving support is very imortant, not just during crazy, stressful, times like this but in life as well. As for the time we have left the support and respect we show weather it be mutual or more is really important, it give us that little more confidence so we know that we're good to go and can keep proceeding and progressing with our studies.
R002 - Supporting others in the class online, inside and outside of class.
R003 - So speaking in class about respect and support, a little goes along way. This is Amanda Todd, and this is her suicide video. She has committed suicide because she was left alone with no support and lost great respect from everyone. This all started from something small and turned into a massive upscale chain reaction, series of mass disrespect and lack of support to one person lead to this. a little goes along way. RIP amanda.
Today for the Origination class we all went to the art exhibition that is being exhibited in Building 5 Red.
There were 4 artists there, and they were the people that put the exhibition together, and hung everything up and placed all the art work everywhere in the room.
The artists talked about there works how they found it difficult to place one art work next to the other, they were pretty much just telling us from their point of view of how they found working with each other, and how they put each others artwork together. They also were giving us tips and strategies on how to come about these problems. One of the tips that the artists gave was for everyone to get mini pictures and a mini map to scale of the room and the artwork and then place them in place so when it comes to the real thing everyone will have an idea of where and who to place there artwork next to so its not just a big muck when it comes to the final day.
I thought that they all gave strong advice and it is very helpful.
R001 - This is a video called The Crevasse, The making of 3D stret art, artist Edgar Muller. He uses so much space to present his artwork, and he knows exactly how much. In our exhibition we should try and picture and measure out how much space we need to we all equally have enough space to show all our art so it can look magnificent.
Collaboration Sarah Modoh Group Exercise - DISCUSSION Vanity & Ego
R001 - You can be too vain about yourself (Megan Fox, even though shes a babe she can talk about herself too much)
Discuss these questions in relation to a group creating a design in collaboration 01 – Are you capable of being vain about your art & design? Yes, some peopel can get very vain. 02 – Do you have a healthy ego? yes I believe I do. 03 – What defines an unhealthy ego? One where someone gets over themselves and thinks that they are better than the rest. 04 – When others want to change your ideas, do you get offended? No, but then yes, it depends on the situation. 05 – When you are asked for opinions on other’s work, do you compare it to your own? No, not unless there work is exactly like mine then i give the person my opinion and then compare it in my head. 06 - When you are asked for opinions on your work, do you compare it to others? of course, I never like my work to be the same as someone else that I know. 07 – If somebody plagiarised your work, would you be proud? No 08 – What is the difference between pride in your work, and vanity about your work? Pride is where you know you've worked hard for it, or you proud because you did it. And Vanity is where you think your work is the best or looks the best but it may not be your all in it. 09 – Do you expect others to listen when you speak? yes 10 – When somebody else speaks are you thinking about what you are going to say next? yes because i don't want to repeat what they were just saying. 11 – Do you form opinions about others quickly? yes but i keep it to myself. 12 – What percentage of you judgments about others talents are right?
R002 - This is transformers 3! in relation to this whole subject, having an unhealthy ego can influence your personality. And rumor has it that Magan Fox will not be playing as that dudes girlfriend because shes too hard to work with on set and shes picky and wants to have everything her way.
Idea Evolution
R003 - Light blob! Ideas!
1. Do you have a strong belief in your personal ideas? Yes 2. How do you evaluate your personal ideas over a period of time? By seeing how effective they are. 3. How flexible are you in changing your mind about the value of your ideas? Yes, i can change my ideas very quickly. 4. How flexible are you in changing your mind about the value of others’ ideas? Probably the same flexibility as of my own ideas. 5. Does hanging on to your old ideas block new ones? Yes it can. 6. Are you slow or fast in moving on when an idea has burnt out? Slow.
WEEK 8 = ORIGINATION: Sarah Modoh Reading Quizz --> Chapter 7 Emotions 1. When Maeda uses the "Feel, and feel for" principle, he is drawing on peoples connection to a very personal experience: feelings. List 3 ways that he would make use of this principle to visitors of your exhibition.
E-Tiquette - This is all up to the students and the designers. The whole point of this is to show ourselves as polite, well dressed and mannered and to make everyone feel welcomed inlcuding our audience aswell as other designers.Nude electronics - For the exhibition by using SHE (Shrink, Hide, & Embody) we can provide a well organised and presented exhibtion that looks clean, sleek and well thought out to show off the students artwork.Aichiku - create inpsiration for our audience and try and get them to engage with our artwork or have some emotion put on them so when they leave they remeber one or five of there favourite artworks.
2. What is animisnm? Why do you think the "Tamagocchi" craze of the '90s became such a craze? How can you apply this to your exhibition? Animisnm - Is where someone has an abject without a soul but treats it as if it does, for example a pet rock, you woul dpretend ot feed it and talk to it as if it were a friend but really it isn't.The Craze - I think the Tamagocchi became such a popular craze to have in the 90's because everyone was getting one and R001 - This woman has more than one tamogotchi.3. Name 2 products that you have purchased that gave you that feeling of "Aichaku" what feeling did those products evoke? was it the feeling that sold the product to you? The two products that give me the "AIchaku" feeling is my GHD Straightener and my shoe collection, but if i had to pick one pair of shoes out of the collection it'd be my gold and black ones becase they were expensive.
The feelings that these products evoke are happy feelings and luxurious good feelings. They make me feel expensive and comfortable, and they bothe make me look good because they're high quality expensive products.
R002 - Red GHD "Lust" one of my faourite belongings.4. How do you reference to emotion relate to the simplicty/complexity relationship discussed in Law 5 - Differences. If theres more emotion it's more complex. If theres less emotion it is simple. But not having/showing more emotion can make the situation seem meaningless or boring.
R003 - This video shows no emotions so its boring at the start, then it shows plenty emotion halfway through so its not borring anymore. This is how the relationship between simplicity and complexity work.
Week 06 – Collaboration Sarah Modoh Group exerciseAcknowledging differences:
Thoughts on what happened; how I felt. How other people felt.
R001 - Acknowledging differences. (here group of people of different races but they're all happy and getting along)
How I felt: At the start I felt nervous, but then when the things that were getting said out I thought that this was ok, but then some of the stuff got pretty deep and reminded me of thoughts that were nice, unpleasant, and weird. Some of them made me giggle a lot and then some just made want to leave the room.
When I was walking to the end of the room especially walking alone I felt like I told someone something about me that they never knew.
How other people felt: When I saw one person go up there I was like “awww so that’s happened to you”. But some questions were funny. I thought that some people were looking at others like do you want to walk together to the end.
How it helped me understand and except other peoples feelings: It was good how one of the rules were not to talk and laugh because I know a lot of us would’ve been laughing and that’s pretty mean if only one of us were walking to the end, and someone laughed I’d think that was disrespectful.
I think everyone was connected in a way even though we weren’t talking to anyone, and this exercise has helped me to understand everyone by not judging so quickly and except other people’s feelings by just listening.
Professional Discretion: Within the business, when you know to keep quiet. You judge when to share information and to who, to different personality types. Knowing when to do things.
Code of behavior. Blog Exercise
Professional discretion and judgment may relate to:
• Assessing when to keep quiet
• Being aware of and responding to different personality types
• Knowing when it is appropriate or inappropriate to share information
• Knowing with whom information should be shared
* Being aware if other colleagues are gossiping too much.
* Knowing not to bring personal issues into work not unless it’s affecting your performance.
1. Add 2 items to the list above 2. Give a REAL example from your own experience to illustrate all 6 points
When one of my friends boyfriends was cheating on my friend, then I had assess when to keep quiet, how to respond to her when she found out. Knowing when was the right time to tell her and how I should’ve told her, and who else to tell about this situation. It was pretty devastating but it was just puppy love and its all in the past now. 3. What is the difference between “discretion” and “judgment” in your own words?
Discretion: The ability or power to decide responsibly.
Judgment: Judgment is where your opinion rates what your looking at or doing. Similar to the word Opinion.
r002 - Discretion, getting at a mature age so people need to learn "discretion" and when to use it on there own. 4. Why do you use these two things in a professional setting?
(Explain by using examples)
So you can become more responsible and aware of what and who’s going on around you. A bad example of discretion and judgment would be in a high school scenario at lunch time, so many people are aware or discretion and judgment but sometimes don’t take into mind of doing it in a professional manner.
Some meaningful definitions:
Behaving ethically – means balancing emotions. E.g. someone gets angry and your response shouldn’t be you getting angry.
Ethical behaviour – being honest, not hiding things.
Showing respect – Give everyone a go.
Understanding consequences – being thoughtful. Thinking of others.
Blog Exercise:

PART 1: Who’s Got a Dollar?
• Demo
• Silent Reflection
1. Would you volunteer your money - that is, take risk? No
2. How did you feel? I felt robbed! And wanted my money back.
3. Did you feel a little sheepish? Yes, but mainly awkward.
4. What about when the ante was upped to ten dollars? I thought it was going to get crazy, but luckily there weren’t that many people.
5. Twenty? I was like damn it.. I should’ve gone first.
6. Did you think the volunteers were foolish? No because they had a feeling they were going to get their money back. Though I felt foolish because I was the one holding back the most and had to give the most.
R003 - "Jarrods dollar :P"
1) Describe the relationship between teaching and learning according to Maeda?
John Maeda says it’s easier to teach because all you have to do is act like you know all the answers than learn, because when you learn from a professor you not only have to take it in but you have to translate it to your understandings.
There’s a difference between good teachers and bad teachers. Good teachers know how to explain what they’re saying and bad teachers don’t now what they’re doing.
Different exciting ways to repeat information so its not boring.
2) Describe the importance of the use of metaphors in learning, why would you use
them, how, give an example?
Why: It’s important to use metaphors in learning to ‘Inspire’ your students so they get a better understanding. Vice versa for students.
How: You would use metaphors when someone doesn’t understand something and your trying to explain it to them, because when you explain something when they can relate to it or know something of it, its easier to understand and absorb.
Example: Love is a lemon - either bitter of sweet
When you’re teaching you have to know how to motivate and inspire your students to absorb the information.
What makes a good student is to wanting to learn, and to want to be there and want that knowledge.
3) BRAIN - what does the acronym stand for – why is it important?
Basics: Are the beginning
Repeat: Yourself often
Avoid: creating desperation
Inspire: With example
Never: forget to repeat yourself
4) Describe a situation where you have been required to teach someone a skill.
How could you apply the BRAIN principle to it?
Cooking:
Basics: where I get all the ingredients.
Repeat: constantly read the steps so I get it right.
Avoid: avoid asking my mum so it looks like I know what I’m doing.
Inspire: maybe call someone that knows how to cook so they can give me direction and inspire me.
Never: keep repeating myself and checking up on the food.
Also what happened in class is that we changed the name of the Exhibition from "Blox" to "Blossom", that was a epic fail. Jarrod and I came up with a good concept of climbing filigree curvilinear looking shapes for the poster because there was a lot of opinions about the smoke effect that Jarrod put on his poster. I thought it was really great and had a nice clean look so I still want to incorporate that into the new poster design. The new name we were thinking of is "Burst" and i really think its has a contemporary, new energy feel to the name. I also would share this all in Google docs but for some reason Jarrod and my docs wont share and i can't even attach an image to my doc.
R001 - The burst concept layout. This is what I've come up with.
Well I couldn't find the original video of what inspired me to like the word Burst. But I'll just try to describe it to you. So there's these crystal shaped flowers and there blooming. while they're blooming there creeping and growing downwards and all of a sudden some lady is walking down on the crystal blossoms as if they were stairs and shes holding a pad box. Because this ad is about pads. But I can't find it anywhere so I can't show you but heres something about change and I guess burst. It's a beer ad for Boag's Draught. From the Pure waters of Tasmania.
R002 - Boag's Draught: From the pure waters of Tasmania. This ad always makes me giggle and somewhat makes my head a bit clearer.
1. What is the major benefit of saving time?
The benefit of saving time is so you can spend time on something else. Multitasking.
2. How do designers integrate time into their products?
- The IPod shuffle is a good example. It makes the decisions for you so you’re not wasting time in picking your music because it’s not as important to you of what song you pick. So the machine does the work for you.
- Casino, they hide the clocks and no windows so you don’t know what the time is, and so you stay there.
- Music on the telephone makes waiting more tolerable.
3. Explain the relationship between making waiting shorter with making waiting more
tolerable.
Making waiting shorter is where you actually shorten the length of the process of the activity.
Making waiting tolerable is where you put a distraction to take your mind of time so you can bear the wait.
4. How can you use your timeline to increase your own efficiency as a designer?
Label your jobs, and then organize your priorities to the most important to the least important. Organize. You get the best ideas on the toilet, because your sub-conscience mind is sorting it out. When your in the toilet or the shower the spaces are smaller and nothings there to distract your except for the one thing which is the water.
5. Briefly outline an event or activity in which you are adept at time saving?
An activity that saves time for me is that I use 2 hands on a Mac when I’m designing, and change the layout of the area to my comfort. On Photoshop two tools that save time is the batch tool and action tool.
6. What part of your design process do you need to improve at, in terms of saving
time?
Be more organized, and Shrink a couple of processes in the making of my designs so they seem more achievable.
Notes from class:
What is a brand:
- corporate identity
- represents
- philosophy
Collection of images
- name
- logo/symbols
- slogan / claim
- design scheme
Collection of ideas
- product
-philosophy
- lifestyle
- service
Example: service, customer service for Coca-Cola when you drink it you think of having fun, no worries. The target market at everyone any age.
Brand recognition: Direct experience with product or service. So do you think the advertising changes your opinion/ experience about the product? To me the advertising definitely influences me with the product. For instance when I watch a iPod ad I instantly want one and want to play with one, even though my experience with them is that I don’t need one and I think they’re a waste of time and money.
Branding is not:
- logo
- description of what a company sells/ offers
- advertising
- in store collateral
- singage staff uniform.
What makes a strong brand?
- grows over time
- brand, timeless
- positioning
- packaging
- promotion
- persistence
- persuasion
- performance (e.g. Coca-Cola taste the same every time you drink it)
Top 10 Brands:
1) Google
2) Microsoft
3) Coca-Cola
4) IBM
5) China Mobile
6) MacDonald’s
7) Apple
8) Vodafone
9) Marlboro
10) General ?
Thinking game – analyzing patterns/ branding
1. The name “point” – meaning / effectiveness
The name “point” means the tip of something.
The effectiveness of the name seems to me that point is saying look this way.
2. The graphic pattern – inferred meaning / effectiveness
The graphic pattern which is a bunch of ordered dots that is warped and distorted to different perspective, leads the eyes to a certain point then fades out in the distance. If there weren’t so many effects done to the dots it would looks plain and meaningless. I think the whole meaning behind this graphic pattern is to show that the exhibition is going in a direction hence the “point” which is the name, where it is pointing in a direction. So the art students are going somewhere in life.
R001 - Point! this is Last years exhibition poster. It's simple and and creative. I like how theres a point made of of circles, it also has a nice dynamic sort of view which ascends and shows that theres a point to this which will bring us up. That's what I've interpreted from this poster.
EXERCISE: Part 2 = Develop 3 words or phrases for a NEW logo for this year’s exhibition
Challenge conventional thought patterns - Think crazy – outside the tetrahedron.
- Out of the box
- Thinking in the square
- Over the line
- Expansion
- Express
- CDU
- Cubism
- Future Designers
- Charles and the creation of the first
- Alpha
- Exapnd
- Thunder
- 0.11
Reflection/ Opinion.
For me, I've thought of only two words or phrases that really interested me, they were; Burst and Progress. As from looking at last years poster I really liked the word Progress but thought it could be a challenging word to play with when it comes to typography.
As we were speaking in class before what makes a strong brand and a logo last long and keep to memory. One I'd like to bring forward isn't exactly a brand but more of a branding for humans, where the hierarchy of people and there place is taken to another level, where only so few can join and the logo for it's group is not just everywhere but subliminally everywhere too. mainly in america and now spread over the world the name is known, I am talking about the Illuminati. The Youtube video below explains how subliminal messages work effectively and can have positive or negative outcomes. In this case negative. I'm linking this video because I think this whole conspiracy has spread viral in the last years particularly in the music industry and they've made a good use of branding, logos, promotion, and persuassion.
R002 - Illuminati conspiracy. in regards to branding, logos, promotion, and persuassion.

R001 = This is the picture of a man will documents all over his face. This is how I feel, I'm not sure where to start or look but I know I have the idea on me.
I wasn't here for week 3, but by going through the sideshow and working out what everyone did i can still contribute my work. (I wasn't here so if i get some of the group work understandings wrong don't get mad!!!)

Google Docs
3 Pros & cons about using Google docs:
Pros:
- Everyone can communicate and collaborate with each other.
- Information can be updated and checked anytime of the day and night.
- Images, videos and links can be shared with everyone, or to a direct person
Cons:
- not everyone has Internet at home, so some people are restricted to just sharing and checking information during uni time.
- Your email may be spammed with all the updates
- The internet/Google may not always send out information to other or may not be able to save your information on the web because it’s crashing.
R002 - This is a video explaining how Google Docs works. very informative and helpful because I've never used Google Docs before.
R001 - John Maedas book cover for "The Laws of Simplicity".

1) What does SHE mean? Shrink (make it smaller), Hide (hiding complexity, but its still there), Embody (putting it all within the device, minimal, hiding the menu.. ).
"If you take some out you still have to put something back in. the SHE concept".
2) In your words define humanist technologist: a technologist one would assume that people work with new technology. Irobot robots flooding away in the future.
The renaissance era, so he wanted to put morals and what ever in to people that make new technology. So technology has a moral to it.
Design with a humane approach which is the main principal. Human being are not slave to the object, the object is a slave to the human.
3) How can you apply the notion of ‘reduce’ to your own design process? (Give a specific example). Dogma show making. What’s the idea of dogma, the process of dogma making is the idea of the display or reduce and embody. “The vow of chastity”, these are the ten vows of how to make a film. Dogma – you make things happen when your put under a lot of constraints.
4) From what you have read in chapter 1, explain the relationships between complicity and simplicity (give 3 specific examples from the book OR your own experiences)
The relationship between complexity and simplicity.
5) REFLECT on, and update your answers in your blog, outside of class
EXERCISE – GROUP WORK (charades)
7% of communication effectiveness can be attributed to words alone. So facial expressions work more than words. i.e.; Body Language.
With voice contributing 38% and ‘non-verbal’s’ providing the remaining 55%.
There are different ways to communicate than verbally. Eg: hand gestures’, notes, pictures, music, symbols, and subliminal messages.
HOMEWORK: 2 pros and 2 cons in relations to any 3 group perspectives. PROS Students:
- Designing everything.
- Getting our ideas out there.
- Publicising ourselves.
- showing how creative and skilled we are from what we've learnt.
CDU:
- Publicising CDU and making the university as well as it's students look good.
- Everyone/ Students/ Public will want to know where it is.
- bringing other students from different subjects i.e. Engineering or Physical Education to come to this event, bringing more socialising and making the place a friendlier place and exciting.
Sponsors:
- Helping out the younger generation.
- Beneficial, publicising themselves .
- Giving to the community.
CONS Students:
- Timeframe, deadlines, getting everything done before i's due.
- Budget, can't make designs too extreme and go over budget.
- Lack of communication will make objective fail.
- Fall under pressure and decide to quit.
CDU:
- Space, is there enough space to fit everyones artwork
- Approving, some things can't be approved e.g. sponsorships, students artwork may have to be modified, can't truly express yourself throughout the art.
- Organising through different staff members to allow us to put very big signs up.
Sponsors:
- Might not get anything out of it, or not what they're promised.
- The exhibition might live up to their expectations so they may not sponsor again for future students.
- May back out in last minute because there business has fallen or have another important event to attend to.
My Opinion:
I really think that this could come together nicely, if everyone stays calm and focussed and remembers to share everything and bring any idea to the table so we are all communications appropriately so the exhibition can be executed successfully and in a orderly fashion so the guests and hosts can be impressed by everyones hard work.
R002 - This is THE john Maeda, talking about simplicity, and hows he's having a meeting with people all around the world. The venue of this meeting is held in the glass house, and he speaks of the glass house because as important the people are to have the meeting the venue is as well. I think If we held our origination and collaboration lectures in the same glass house with the same scene I think everyone would have much more to say as a group effort because it's a place where everyone can chill out and really talk and reflect as well as collaborate.
Origination - Sarah Modoh
