week02 Sarah Modoh: Origination_28.07.2012 ~

Origination Sarah Modoh

R001 - John Maedas book cover for "The Laws of Simplicity".

28/07/2010 – Exhibition = Sarah Modoh

1) What does SHE mean? Shrink (make it smaller), Hide (hiding complexity, but its still there), Embody (putting it all within the device, minimal, hiding the menu.. ).

"If you take some out you still have to put something back in. the SHE concept".

2) In your words define humanist technologist: a technologist one would assume that people work with new technology. Irobot robots flooding away in the future.
The renaissance era, so he wanted to put morals and what ever in to people that make new technology. So technology has a moral to it.
Design with a humane approach which is the main principal. Human being are not slave to the object, the object is a slave to the human.
3) How can you apply the notion of ‘reduce’ to your own design process? (Give a specific example). Dogma show making. What’s the idea of dogma, the process of dogma making is the idea of the display or reduce and embody. “The vow of chastity”, these are the ten vows of how to make a film. Dogma – you make things happen when your put under a lot of constraints.
4) From what you have read in chapter 1, explain the relationships between complicity and simplicity (give 3 specific examples from the book OR your own experiences)
The relationship between complexity and simplicity.
5) REFLECT on, and update your answers in your blog, outside of class

EXERCISE – GROUP WORK (charades)
7% of communication effectiveness can be attributed to words alone. So facial expressions work more than words. i.e.; Body Language.
With voice contributing 38% and ‘non-verbal’s’ providing the remaining 55%.
There are different ways to communicate than verbally. Eg: hand gestures’, notes, pictures, music, symbols, and subliminal messages.

HOMEWORK: 2 pros and 2 cons in relations to any 3 group perspectives.
PROS
Students:
- Designing everything.
- Getting our ideas out there.
- Publicising ourselves.
- showing how creative and skilled we are from what we've learnt.

CDU:
- Publicising CDU and making the university as well as it's students look good.
- Everyone/ Students/ Public will want to know where it is.
- bringing other students from different subjects i.e. Engineering or Physical Education to come to this event, bringing more socialising and making the place a friendlier place and exciting.

Sponsors:
- Helping out the younger generation.
- Beneficial, publicising themselves .
- Giving to the community.

CONS
Students:
- Timeframe, deadlines, getting everything done before i's due.
- Budget, can't make designs too extreme and go over budget.
- Lack of communication will make objective fail.
- Fall under pressure and decide to quit.

CDU:
- Space, is there enough space to fit everyones artwork
- Approving, some things can't be approved e.g. sponsorships, students artwork may have to be modified, can't truly express yourself throughout the art.
- Organising through different staff members to allow us to put very big signs up.

Sponsors:
- Might not get anything out of it, or not what they're promised.
- The exhibition might live up to their expectations so they may not sponsor again for future students.
- May back out in last minute because there business has fallen or have another important event to attend to.

My Opinion:
I really think that this could come together nicely, if everyone stays calm and focussed and remembers to share everything and bring any idea to the table so we are all communications appropriately so the exhibition can be executed successfully and in a orderly fashion so the guests and hosts can be impressed by everyones hard work.

R002 - This is THE john Maeda, talking about simplicity, and hows he's having a meeting with people all around the world. The venue of this meeting is held in the glass house, and he speaks of the glass house because as important the people are to have the meeting the venue is as well. I think If we held our origination and collaboration lectures in the same glass house with the same scene I think everyone would have much more to say as a group effort because it's a place where everyone can chill out and really talk and reflect as well as collaborate.

  1. Really good start with a mixture of notes and commentary, then slid into just pasted questions and lecture notes, so organization and methodical approach is something to look at.

It's great to have ideas and thoughts, but the art of communication is to get those ideas to others. I figure you may be adding to/refining this later which is ok.

The plan with these class blogs is for you to answer the questions soon after class when the ideas are fresh. Then after a few days come back when you have developed some more thoughts and refine the blog.

Thanks for your efforts Sarah - good to have you guys on board.

  3. Still waiting on Weeks 03 & 04.

For Week 04, don't forget to complete the 2 exercises in the Thinking Game on page 10 of your Power Point PDF.

The blog entries are graded every week, so you make sure you do all the tasks to get a CA (Competency Achieved) at end of semester.
